Products Association indicated that Americans spend over $43 billion
on their dogs every single year! That is a huge number and it is
still growing today. Like me, most pet owners treat their animals
as members of the family. That is a very important distinction
regarding the demand for goods and services in this industry. There
is an abundant need for pet care businesses and its not going away
anytime soon. In fact, Business Week reported
on the Pet
Economy in the United States. Here is an part of that article:
"Americans now spend $41 billion a year on their
pets” more than the
gross domestic product of all but 64 countries in the world. That's
double the amount shelled out on pets a decade ago, with annual
spending expected to hit $52 billion in the next two years,
according to Packaged Facts, a consumer research company based in
Rockville, Md.
That puts the yearly cost of buying, feeding, and caring for pets in
excess of what Americans spend on the movies ($10.8 billion),
playing video games ($11.6 billion), and listening to recorded music
($10.6 billion) combined.
"People are no longer satisfied to reward their pet in pet
terms,"
argues Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Products
Manufacturers Assn. (APPMA). "They want to reward their pet in human
terms." That means hotels instead of kennels, braces to fix crooked
teeth, and frilly canine ball gowns.
Pet owners are becoming increasingly demanding consumers who won't
put up with substandard products, non-stimulating environments, or
shoddy service for their animals. “

Second, pet sitting business is
completely recession proof. That pure and simply means that it is
an extremely stable business to be involved in. A major study
preformed by the Marshall School of Business concluded that the pet
industry has always been immune to recessionary market pressures and
will continue to grow dramatically over the next ten years. While
the economy on most other fronts are slowing or even falling apart,
the pet care industry has actually grown in the last 3 years.
Laura Bennet, an expert in the pet care industry was recently
quoted in Small Business Trends Magazine on the subject of growth
and stability in this industry as saying,
"More
pet owners will pay for these services as it is becoming socially
unacceptable in most cities, to leave your dog alone during the day
or your cat alone for the weekend. In addition, very stable growth
will be seen in pet services such as grooming, boarding, pet
photography, dog walking, and pet sitting.
We also predict
that we will see more pet services partnering together (or perhaps
merging together) to support a pet through its life, such as
breeders (birth), and groomers, doggie daycare, pet hotels, and pet
insurance (lifetime services), and pet trusts and
cremations/burials/memorials (for a pet's death)."

Finally,
starting a pet sitting business does not require a great deal of

needed. I actually started part-time on the weekends in order to
